Washing a suv

SUVs are taller than most vehicles and often carry roof gear, a rear spare or running boards. Check the restrictions posted at the entrance before you drive in, then look at anything bolted on.

Check before you drive in

It takes a minute. The restrictions are posted at the entrance.

  • Posted restrictions with gear included

Read the restrictions at the entrance and compare them with your SUV as it is today, including any roof rack, box or light bar. If you are unsure whether it is within them, do not drive in.

  • Roof gear

Remove cargo boxes, bike carriers and anything strapped to the rack. Loose straps and covers can flap and catch in high-pressure spray.

  • Rear-mounted spare

If your spare hangs on the tailgate, make sure it and its cover are tight. A loose cover can be lifted by the spray.

  • Running boards and steps

Power running boards should be retracted. Fixed steps collect mud and salt on top, so check them after the wash and knock off anything left.

Which wash for a suv

An SUV has a large underside with a lot of exposed frame and suspension, which is where salt does the most harm, so Luxury, with its under-car spray and rust inhibitor, makes sense in winter. Outside salt season, Full Wash covers the underside for less.
